| I have a couple of Wheeler
stories to share. I remember when Wheeler was surveying kelp beds from the
air. He told us that he flew solo, and it was hard to turn the plane so he
could photograph, so he opened the wheel wells, let go of the steering
wheel, and bent down to take pictures through the wheel well. Typical,
getting the job done.
I also remember when we were all trying to get the "old guys" who were not divers to believe that we could actually do some science underwater when we were all wrapped up in rubber and freezing to death. Wheeler helped us show them that we could work under water, and it was his article/presentation in National Geographic that helped us get some respect. Other stories would include a tour through his car trunk (I was always afraid something would jump out at me), his incredible generosity and patience, and just knowing him. He came to Catalina to get involved in the kelp-hemidome project, and couldn't remember whether or not he was certified, so I helped him review the tables, etc., Ronnie tested him and checked him out, and he was worried that he wouldn't pass!
