Terrestrial

MBC has been conducting biological assessments of coastal and inland terrestrial habitats throughout southern California for the past 14 years. Our biologists have field expertise in terrestrial botany, zoology, and ecology with direct experience evaluating potential environmental impacts due to development and construction projects. The following timeline marks noteworthy studies completed by MBC over the past 30 years.

  • 1998 Conducted surveys of nesting black-crowned night herons at the closed Long Beach Naval Station and assisted the Port of Long Beach in preparing a mitigation plan to relocate existing colonies

  • 1995 Prepared an Environmental Assessment to evaluate the potential impacts to the California least tern and the California brown pelican due to the Navy's proposed disposal and reuse plan for the Long Beach Naval Station and the Navy Mole

  • 1995 Began a multi-year (1995-present) riparian vegetation mapping survey of the riverbed along the Santa Ana River in San Bernardino County in order to assess impacts due to discharge of tertiary-treated effluent from the new Colton-San Bernardino joint wastewater treatment facility

  • 1991 Surveyed and mapped terrestrial and estuarine resources at Aliso Rock, South Laguna Beach, in order to document existing environmental conditions and assess potential impacts due to proposed construction
1991 Conducted a multi-year (1991-1994) vegetation mapping and mitigation monitoring study for replacement of the City of Long Beach Gas Department's gas pipeline in the Bolsa Chica Wetlands

  • 1990 Conducted a biological field survey for the proposed Lakeview Nuevo housing development in Riverside County to assess potential impacts to the existing vegetation and the endangered Stephens' kangaroo rat and the Los Angeles pocket mouse

  • 1990 Conducted a multi-year (1990-1992) beach vegetation/re-vegetation monitoring study to assess the impacts of UNOCAL's Platform Gina to onshore oil processing facility pipeline replacement project

  • 1989 Conducted a biological survey of a four-acre site near the I-15 Freeway north of San Bernardino to assess the potential impacts of proposed development on the existing habitat

  • 1988 Conducted a multi-year (1988-1993) natural resources inventory, permit assistance, and mitigation monitoring program for a residential development at Aliso Viejo in Orange County

  • 1985 Surveyed terrestrial and marine resources in Upper Newport Bay to determine the feasibility of extending the existing marina into an undeveloped salt marsh
